There are many terrible effects of Lake Tai. Since the 1980's, China has experienced the highest economic growth rate in the world. Industrial development and urbanization has threatened water quality in China. Since then, as a result of the rapid rate of industrial development, China's rivers and lakes are dead and they are full of waste.
Stricter use of fertilizers and pesticides are used for farming because officials are worried the the chemicals will seep into the water and contribute to the decreasing water quality. There have also been reports that many wastewater companies have been shutdown. These reports have not been confirmed yet.
All the fish are dying, the birds around the lake drop dead and the ducks are struggling to survive. The people around it can hardly stand how their main freshwater source is now green and polluted.
You can't even filter it, there's nothing you can do to it to revive it to fresh and clean water unless serious work is done. People get clean water from other fresh water sources until Lake Tai is cleaned up. The most serious was the Wuxi water crisis in 2007, where you can smell a stench coming from the tap. If you turned the tap on, green water comes out.
Pollution is not Taihu Basin’s only problem: it is also grappling with a lack of water because of the algae. Years’ worth of data shows that the densely populated and developed Taihu region requires 37 billion cubic metres of water annually. But the average yearly supply from Taihu water sources is only 17.7 billion cubic metres.
It looks very ugly, no, seriously. It decreases the amount of tourists in the area who used to there annualy, but studies show that a handful of people go there annualy now.
